The Free Dish TV scheme was approved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government wants to implement this scheme by 2026. And it will do this by building a modern studio for Dish TV broadcasting for free.
The program intends to provide free Dish TV to 8,00,000 families and extend its benefits to tribal and isolated border areas including Naxalite regions. A budget of Rs 2,539 crore has been set aside by the government for this programme. The purpose of this program is to improve Doordarshan and Radio. It will give more than 80% people free access to channels of their choice.
Objectives of Free Dish TV Plan

- The main objective of the free DTH scheme is to provide free set-top boxes to economically disadvantaged citizens across the country.
- This will enable availability of DTH services in remote and border areas.
- Will also ensure access to current information.
- The scheme aims to increase AIR FM’s geographic transmitter coverage from 59% to 66% and population-wise transmitter coverage from 68% to 80%.
- Through this scheme citizens will have access to free Doordarshan channels along with other channels for educational, informational and entertainment purposes.
